Alive for a Reason

I have just been reading one of the most beautiful affirmations of just how special we are to our Creator God. We have all, every single one of us, been made for a unique and special reason. Not one of us is a mistake. Not one of us has arrived on planet Earth in the wrong century or country and not one of us has been born of the wrong nationality. We are all here to bring goodness, love, forgiveness and grace to our own world - the people with whom we mix every day of our lives.

When life is tough, or we feel of no value to others, this brings enormous comfort to our hearts. The knowledge of the truth about us - that the Eternal God is always FOR us, and that he is making us into the people he has designed for us to be, always gives us hope and confidence. The truth that Jesus Christ is everyday creating something beautiful within us, that he is saving us for good work and for things which will be beneficial to ourselves as well as others, is indeed encouraging. This is something which others down through the ages have also found to be true, and which has also given them the endurance to withstand all kinds of problems and difficult situations.

Today I have been reading some of the writings of St. Paul. He had a tough life, and was actually doing time in jail when he wrote these words, but he was still triumphant and rejoicing in the truth that he was in the saving hands of Creator God :

'How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He is the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ. Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on US as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.

Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It's God's gift from start to finish! We don't play the major role. If we did, we'd probably go around bragging that we'd done the whole thing!

No, we neither make or save ourselves. God does both the making and the saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do'. ( from Ephesians 1 & 2 - The Message).

Let us all be encouraged today, to co-operate with our Maker. Let us all commit to do our part in finding out who we really are, what our inner motives are, and what our deep-down desires are. Then may we be prepared to alter them to bring them more into alignment with those we know in our hearts and souls and spirits are purer, more just and more helpful motives and desires - attitudes which will please God, and bring him joy.

Let's also allow our minds and hearts to be open to see the possibilities around us where we can in fact make a good, beneficial effect in our own surroundings, wherever they may be. Our homes, workplaces, schools, streets, shopping centres - in fact everywhere we go today, are all places of opportunity where we can show good works, kind attitudes, tolerant hearts and generous spirits. All of these things will be helpful not only to those around us, but give us each a sense of being a better, more productive person. Let's join Jesus Christ in the good, saving work which he has been doing for millennia, right now, in OUR situation, time and the world in which we live.
