Fufillment of destiny

Fufillment of destiny - What do you consider it actually means? Fufillment of the central purpose of one's earthly existence? The one end that all our drives, conscious and subconscious, lead us towards? The service of the whole? Seeing ourselves to be and being an instrument for the achievement of a larger purpose? An inevitable end that defines us and our lives, whether we embrace it or not? What is "fulfillment of destiny"?

The crux of the matter in relation to fulfillment of one's destiny, seems to be

      a) its inevitability - whether one recognises it or not
      b) its paramount significance in defining our entire lives, our meaning , purpose and fulfillment. That which combines fufillment and purpose with an intrinsic and undeniable force to alter or define our lives seems to be our destiny, doing that which we are born to do.

This implies a vast intelligence at work with every small event and circumstance intimately and meaningfully related to another, although we may see life as disconnected parts. The concept of destiny is related to ultimate meaning in relation to a larger whole of which we are only a part. Much like an arm or leg in relation to the whole body, it exists, not for itself but for a larger whole. In its proper use and focus, lies its own best expression and the wellbeing of the larger whole. This is almost like saying that each human being exists for all others, for the larger good and for humanity as a whole. The individual's best good, the complete unfoldment of his own unique potential is intimately intertwined and inextricably interlinked with the good of the whole. The inevitable force of circumstances that we cannot alter or deny, that leads us along to the fulfillment of our innate potential, to an expression of perfection in our own unique way, is our destiny. To acknowledge and consciously cooperate with it is to live in wisdom.

When one sees one's own life in terms of the fulfillment of one's own destiny, one sees oneself in relation to a larger purpose that gives direction and meaning to our lives. The terrorist may see a gruesome deed as the fulfillment of his destiny. He may have complete integrity of thought and action in that he acts upon what he truly believes. Therefore, we will do well to refrain from judgement upon people based on events. Rather, to seek meaning, direction and purpose in our lives, we must use the force of circumstances to turn us back to our inner wisdom, our own deepest self where all strength, wisdom and compassion lie in inexhaustible measure. This is not to become religious or fatalistic but to empower ourselves truly and fundamentally, first, by seeking and finding strength, meaning and purpose only within ourselves. Secondly, looking towards our own inner wisdom and conviction, which in the ultimate analysis, is our only true, constant and most intimate guide on life's journey.

These then, are the several issues related to a fulfillment of our destiny, as I see it. The belief in destiny is not to be mistaken for an attitude of fatalism, although superficially, it may be easy to jump to conclusions and sit in judgement as we often do. Fatalism implies an inertia, a surrender to forces perceived as unstoppable and supreme but actually outside of ourselves. We see the force of unstoppable circumstances determining the course of our lives independent of our thought and action. Fatalism reduces us to merely impotent bystanders on the road of life. On the other hand, the concept of destiny implies the uncovering and eventual realisation of our own hidden purpose. It means seeing beneath the surface, seeing the interrelatedness of life in all its aspects and seeing extraordinary meaning and beauty in life in the light of this oneness.

An appreciation of the essential unity of all creation, the undeniable interrelatedness of all life and our role on life's stage in a meaningful relationship to the whole - this is the beginning of the fulfillment of one's destiny. It is an enlargement and transformation of one's own vision, expanding beyond petty and narrow separativeness and concerns and rising to embrace the whole of humanity as one. Therefore, the understanding and the fulfillment of one's own destiny implies the flash of intuitive insight which reveals a hidden purpose that promotes the larger good. This light, which emerges from the infinite capabilities of our own core, transcends sensation, feeling and thought in a unitive movement. It is infact, a mere indication and pointer of that vast, infinite power that is our own consciousness, our own deepest self. Pure awareness, free from notions, likes and dislikes, attraction and aversion is our true nature. This awareness is all seeing and all knowing in its nature and is the hidden light of our very existence. Like all our fame and wealth would be futile if we were deprived of the air we breathe, the light of awareness is the substratum of our very existence, whether we know it or not.

Occasionally, in the stormy seas of life, as we sail fearfully amidst impenetrable darkness, there is a beam of light that reduces our fear and shows us the way. This stirring of the soul, so to speak, is not a supernatural event but direction and meaning, purpose and strength from our own deepest self. If we are alert and receptive, this beam of light comes regularly and unfailingly like an old and supremely efficient lighthouse until we are finally bathed in its light and free from darkness and fear.

To spot and respond to this light is to see our life's purpose, to see the folly of superficial pursuit of acquisition and pleasure, to see the gist of our life's direction in an inexplicable but far sighted way. This flash of realisation is an acknowledgement of our own destiny. To listen to its rythm and be guided by its light is the unfoldment of our purpose. To be one with it is the fulfillment of our destiny. In this supreme union, actor and action are one as our awareness shatters the narrow cage of separativeness and soars in the magnificent flight of oneness in ecstasy and joy.
