Breaking Free: A Pioneering Spirit

Sometimes, I am amazed by the streak of conformity in us and in our societies. The need and propensity to conform seems to be innate in every man and woman who is seeking security, safety and survival in society. Obviously, none of us lives in complete isolation. We live in a society of some sort. All of us seek survival and safety in the midst of that society. We need the society for our survival and the society needs our conformity for its own perpetuation. In this web of need and mutual convenience, we often walk the road to loneliness, alienation and despair.

The conformity and the order, the acceptance and the approval of society only ensure our survival. However, they often alienate us from our own deepest self. In this survival, is endless misery and despair. Each of us is born unique, born to win, born to smile and laugh, born to share. Yet, we learn patterns of thought and behaviour to ensure our own survival. This is understandable and inevitable. However, what is imprisoned and defeated in ourselves is our own ability to live. In learning how to survive, we often forget how to live.

After having ensured our own survival, can we break free of the prison of conditioning that society imposes on us? Can we break free of the patterns of thought and action that choke our creativity and stifle our joy? Can we summon the courage to face the rejection of an ignorant and hypocritical mass to chase our dreams and our passion? Can we overcome our own fear of rejection, of loneliness and of emptiness and make the leap of faith to an expression of our own deepest self? Can we summon the love, the kindness, the compassion, the gentleness, the oneness and the vision to break free from mindless conformity? Can we walk a trailblazing path? In realising our own infinite potential, in making our dreams come true, can we beome a pioneering spirit for the whole society?

We can do so only if we free ourselves from the prison of learnt notions and unlock the fountain of creativity and love within us. In doing so, we will have to examine and investigate our own deepest values and beliefs. We will have to peel the layers of conditioning, however slowly and painfully. We will have to examine and revalidate our beliefs and values constantly in the light of our own inner wisdom. We shall have to constantly question ourselves and our own motives. We shall have to face our fears. We shall have to admit our own smallness and insignificance. We shall have to discard our inflated self images. We shall have to transcend our likes and dislikes, our passions and hatred. We shall have to admit our helplessness and ignorance.

In this extraordinary emptiness, we shall be filled with the infinite joy and splendour, peace and contentment, bliss and creativity that is our own deepest self. In embracing our own deepest self, we shall melt in a sea of oneness with the whole of creation. No tear shall be too small to wipe away, no smile too weak to fill the heart with joy. In this supreme oneness and joy, peace and contentment, we shall heal everything in our path, bring light in the midst of darkness, joy amidst sorrow, wisdom amidst ignorance. In this dance of joy and creativity, we shall celebrate the purpose and splendour of all creation. We shall be a pioneering spirit to the very society that spurned us.
