I'm imaging a large, silent circle composed of humans who are listening. The group has a leader, but the leader is not visible to the naked eye. He is, nevertheless, communicating to each one the understandings, the wisdom, that each is in need of receiving at that moment. All will eventually leave the circle regenerated and fulfilled. They will be larger than they were when they joined the circle, never to return to their previous state.

"Later on, we'll know all about it."
"We'll learn all about it when we get to Heaven."
"Later on, we'll understand why."
When these frequently uttered words are spoken in deep reverence for God and his creation, they are beautiful--but when spoken casually in reference to issues such as: "why did Grandma have to be so mean to Grandpa", do we really want to go to Heaven and hear about Grandpa's mistakes when he was a young man?

Once we mentally and emotionally claim someone or something as our own, we do not want to ever have to let go. Even though we understand these attitudes of possessiveness can stand in the way of our relationship with God, we are more inclined to explain to God why we need Him to help us hold on than are we to make God our first priority by being willing to let go of anything which holds too great a position within us.

Someone voiced concern that I might be getting discouraged while facing so much pain and seeing no reward. It caught me by surprise because I've never established expectations--no five-year plan here. Yet, when the news arrived that one of my Churchman Ave. kids had received 18 months of jail time, that concerned voice was the first thing to echo in my head. Well, yeah, it would be to the devil's advantage to build upon any destructive seed.

For some weeks it has seemed as though God was slipping farther and farther away. I probably didn't even notice at first, but once I did, I really missed the closeness; still I was busy working for Him in both volunteer and paying jobs so I didn't really take action until I felt a twinge of loneliness. Whoa!! Now I knew it was time for drastic measures.

What's life done for you, lately? Life sucks?? We all understand the sentiment for we've all "been there, done that" and our reaction to reading junk about joy was definite--we didn't! As I ponder, I'm listening to a Blues station on www.live365.com. I used to love listening to the blues--oh, yes! I knew where they were coming from--and as I listened I slipped right into a deeply morose mood. I slipped right into a deep, dark hole and pulled those blues right in on top of me.

Having floundered through life trying to determine which was the better route to pursue: spiritual, mental or financial rewards--my experiences now find me ready to live three more lives each of which would be dedicated to the sole pursuit of either spiritual, mental or financial rewards. Then, and only then, I might be in a position to have a valid opinion.

I find it ironic that I am writing this particular piece on Mother's Day. I have been on the phone for some time with a mother who is faced with some hard decisions. The man in her life has put her in the position of choosing between him and her children. With the hormones screaming "take care of me", everything's so foggy it feels more like a choice between being true to oneself or taking care of one's children.

"What are we doing to our children?"
Today's guidelines for child-rearing, "According to our view, freedom given and understood early enough would result in a natural evolution to maturity and self-discipline." may work for some children, but we are not all cut out of the same mold and some of us just naturally push to see how far we can get before we are stopped.

We sat on the porch and considered her desire to overcome her gambling habit. She has been trying to give it up for a long time now and is discouraged about ever succeeding because she still hasn't grasped how much God will help her if she really, really means it.
