I am seriously working to build a garden which is sustainable:
sustainable as in self-renewing and sustainable as in fully satisfying
the human nutritional needs. Can it be done? Yes, for “The hardest
thing to see is what is in front of your eyes.” -Goethe
My main source of seeds and information is ECHO,
a group whose mission is to equip people with resources and skills to
reduce hunger and improve the lives of the poor. Their main nursery is
very close to me and their workshops are filled with ideas on making
lots of food with very little in the way of resources.
God is condemned for letting people starve to death after having made
promises to provide. ECHO has greatly impacted me with their proof that
God's promise to provide is right there in front of the starving people
in the poorest part of the world. It is the Moringa Tree
and please click through for more information than I have copied here.
The Moringa is the most nutritionally complete plant to have been
discovered by man. It's always been used for medicinal purposes and as
a shade tree, but apparently its value as food has been lost in modern
times. It’s like growing multi-vitamins at your doorstep: Vitamin A,
Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin C, Calcium, Chromium,
Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Manganese, Potassium, Protein,
Zinc. Not only that, but Moringa leaves also contain a wealth of other
complementary vitamins and minerals.
Totally versatile, it can even be grown in a container. I have 9
Moringa Trees in my garden. When I am working and become thirsty, I
pull Moringa leaves and nibble on them. In the kitchen, since they have
little flavor, they are used to nutritionally enhance everything from
Pesto to casserole to salad.
Nutritional analysis has shown that Moringa leaves are extremely
nutritious. In fact, they contain larger amounts of several important
nutrients than the common foods often associated with these nutrients.
These include vitamin C, which fights a host of illnesses including
colds and flu; vitamin A, which acts as a shield against eye disease,
skin disease, heart ailments, diarrhea, and many other diseases;
Calcium, which builds strong bones and teeth and helps prevent
osteoporosis; Potassium, which is essential for the functioning of the
brain and nerves, and Proteins, the basic building blocks of all our
body cells.
The Trees for Life
website points out the sad fact: "We are all well familiar with the
problems of malnutrition in our world, and how much suffering and death
result. [In] the countries with the highest rates of malnutrition...the
amazing thing about Moringa is that . . . it grows in almost exactly
the same places. These are the countries where Moringa grows—exactly
where it is needed the most." Now what was that about God not
providing??
