Life is Nowfrom How God Messed Up My Religion by Pam HogeweideMuch of my adulthood has been a state of continual anticipation for the real stuff to kick into gear out there somewhere in the elusive future. I'll truly reach the apex of who I am Out There somewhere in the inaccessible Tomorrowland. It has been an exercise mostly of futility, waiting for the flesh of today and the phantom of tomorrow to intersect.
Nowhere has this been more apparent than in my spiritual journey. For the thousands of hours of sermons I have listened to in my career as a Christian, it has often been a message of Get Better and then You'll Truly Live Your Best Life.
I've waited for the constellation of greatness inside of me to shine into view. I've prayed and stomped and tried to holler my way to the epic destiny that surely is mine to have if only I get my sh*t together.
Love. Faith. Personal growth. Relationships. Talents. Blah...blah...blah.
It has taken me decades to discover what I now believe is a simple yet profound truth:
Believe in Today, for your Life is Now.
Sounds kinda Zen'ish, yet it is an oft overlooked message of Christ who said such things like Don't worry about tomorrow, today has enough troubles of it's own.
So here's the thing: life is a journey and there is a tomorrow waiting out there on the horizon. But like the end of the rainbow that can be seen, yet never truly discovered, so it is with the promises of a better, improved me in the dream of tomorrow. Life is Now. I am today. This is who I am, right now and right here.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life.
Now is who I am and what I have.
Amen.
