Precious Windows of Opportunity

Endless entertainment is always as near as the
remote control, and oh how we love to reach out
and click it. Wild and wacky, daring and dramatic,
bold and beautiful, the lives of real and imagined
people spill into our living rooms. Plenty of good
action is dished up for our viewing pleasure, day
after day, night after night.

The window of fascinating fiction and ever
unfolding dramas entertains our brains. We sit
and we watch and we watch and we sit, and the
atmosphere of our lives becomes stale from lack
of movement.

Life presents precious windows of opportunity to
get up, get out and feed all of our senses. Yet, we
don't open them and familiarize ourselves with the
sights and smells and feel of everything around us.

The window to color-splashed sunsets and
dramatic skies of dawn, remains closed. The
window to walk amidst the sights and sounds of
our yards and neighborhoods, to know them
intimately and make them our own, is shut tight.
The window to breathe in the scent of nature and
make it part of who we are, is pulled down and
unused. The window to stand beneath a star
studded blanket of a black velvet night, is never
opened.

Time is a gift of mystery. No one knows the hour
it will end. Should this day be my last, I want to see
the sun rise and set, feel the caress of the breeze
that ripples the leaves on the trees in my yard, let
the stars kiss my face goodnight. Should tomorrow
wake without me, let the space I left behind, stir
with the gentle closing of the many open windows
of my life.
