What Are Runes? A rune is a letter within an ancient Northern Germanic alphabet known as the Elder FUTHARK, which consists of 24 runes, and is typically found inscribed on bone or stone. Their origins can be traced back as far as 250BC in ancient Europe. History shows us that runes were first used for divination purposes. Only later were they adopted for writing and record keeping. Through centuries of oral traditions and finally the written word, their magical associations have never been lost.
