Women can now get specialized information about Social Security through a new Web site. The new site, "For Women," provides basic information on retirement, survivors and disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income benefits and Medicare benefits pertinent to women. The information helps women learn about Social Security benefits and how they are affected in their varied roles as workers, wives, housewives, mothers, grandmothers, employers, widows, or divorcees.
"The Social Security program treats all workers - men and women - exactly the same," said Paul Jackson, Social Security manager in Anniston. "But because of different life experiences, the real world results are different. As a group, women live longer than men, earn less and rely on Social Security for most of their retirement income. They need to know what the program means to them in their particular circumstances."
By selecting the category that best describes your stage in life, you can obtain information on:
how to change your name;
how marriage affects your benefits;
how to get your baby's Social Security number;
family protection;
what happens when your marital status changes;
your rights as a divorced wife; and "For Women" also allows a woman to link to other federal agency Web sites for women, such as the Department of Labor's "Women's Bureau," the Department of Health and Human Service's "Women's Health" and the White House's "Federal Programs and Resources for Women and Families."
The "For Women" is at www.ssa.gov/women. For questions or more information, call Social Security toll free at 1-800-772-1213.
