    Anything's Better than Doing Nothing

Heading home after a hard day's "work" volunteering at the Virtual Scavenger Project warehouse, we were delayed at a railroad crossing for what seemed to be an eternity. The children who had jumped in my car ready for a day of volunteering were hot and dusty and tired. The ice cream truck was stuck in the traffic behind us and no one had any money. Such torture!! But it all changed in an instant for me when I heard from the backseat, "It's a lot better than doing nothing all day."

How often I hear a parent remark, "My kid don't have to work," while the children are expressing a desire to learn how to do things, to have their minds and bodies challenged, to be doing anything! Swimming is a favorite pasttime on my block, but swimming gets old and boring if it's all one does every day just as work gets old and boring if it's all one does every day. The children on Churchman Ave. are definite in their desire to "mix it up."

At Virtual Scavengers, We really have a good time in an atmosphere bordering on horseplay while serious work is always taking place. Many of the volunteers are going far beyond building a computer and are in training to become certified so they can move into a good paying job. Some of the people are homeless, some disabled, but all are intent upon becoming knowledgeable in a field which leads to a new career.

The mission of the Virtual Scavenger Project is truly an example of humankind giving one another a boost. When large companies get new computers, the old ones frequently end up at VSP's warehouse and we go to work taking them apart, saving the parts which are good, sorting the unusable and placing them in large containers to be sold as salvage. The usable parts go into building good computers which end up just about everywhere--even overseas. A large order for South Africa was being prepared this week. Then after we have worked at least 16 hours, we get a computer of our own!!

The younger people must be accompanied by adults. We start work each Saturday at 11 AM at The Indianapolis Enterprise Center, 55 S. State Street, and work till 3:30 PM. A hot lunch is furnished. For more information on the project, check it out at www.vscavengers.org
