    Freedom, Fretting and Fussing

It is Independence Day in the United States of America. For those who are celebrating freedom today, I have a question: What is freedom? If our personal lives are filled with compulsive wishes continually consuming our time and energy, what do we know about freedom?

I have been spending time fretting and fussing over U.S. political affairs as our freedom continues to be eroded by the loss of integrity and character among our people. Oswald Chambers hit me squarely between the eyes with, "It sounds so easy to talk about 'resting in the Lord' and 'waiting patiently for Him' until the nest is upset - until we live, as so many are doing, in tumult and anguish, is it possible then to rest in the Lord?"

Once again, I need to start at home before tackling the inequities of the world. If I am consumed by hatred of another, by a need for drugs, a compulsion to gamble away my resources or simply held back from taking actions I want to take because of a fear of the disapproval of another, then what freedom do I have? If I have not developed a trust in God that will help me overcome my personal issues and become all that I was destined to be, then why is fretting and fussing over freedom even on my radar screen?

I am convinced my personal freedom has to come before the corporate freedom can be strong enough to sustain itself. A people who have surrendered control of their lives to The One Living God is a people who have gained control of their affairs and, thusly, their freedom.
