    Is This Heaven?

She haltingly wandered down the street, picking up the street litter as she came toward the trash can the children had placed near their Trash Art project. As she drew closer to the can where she dumped her armload of dirty, dripping refuse, I could tell she was muttering to herself. I watched as she continued to meander in circular patterns, picking up and dumping into the can, until she came close enough to hear me say, "Would you like a pop?"

Without looking up from her task, she mumbled something and shook her head "yes". When I returned with the drink, she was standing at the foot of the steps to my porch and I invited her up, offering her a seat as she grabbed for the drink in my hand. Gulping her drink down, she finally looked at me, and I found myself gazing into the most beautiful hazel eyes I'd ever seen. She looked at me steadily for the longest time and then she said, "Is this Heaven?"

"Human beings are parts of the whole called by us a universe—parts limited in time and space. They experience themselves, their thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of their consciousnesses. This delusion is a kind of prison for us; it restricts us to our personal decisions and our affections to a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." --Albert Einstein
