    Hurting for Another

So much is written about dealing with life's difficulties, of patiently waiting for God's direction, but what about when we must stand alongside another who is suffering. It can be extremely hard to be patient during our own trials, but I think I'm finding it even harder to hold my peace during others' pain.

Our difficulties, so frequently, are precipitated by our own actions and being able to look at them from this standpoint, knowing God is there even when it is our fault, helps us deal with it. When someone comes to us with a tale of woe, as we begin to empathize, we feel real pain and want desperately to relieve their pain. And this is where we get into the middle of the situation and make everything worse as we attempt to "solve the problem".

"The witch doctor succeeds for the same reason all the rest of us succeed. Each patient carries his or her own doctor inside him or her. They come to us not knowing that truth. We are at our best when we give the doctor who resides within each patient a chance to go to work." --Albert Schweitzer

And so, once again, I must remember I can resolve nothing, I can fix nothing, but I can turn to The Father Above and request His comforting hand upon the one who is hurting. Thus, I have been a truly helpful friend.
