    When Does Opportunity Knock?

Missy is entering the seventh grade this year. She has the looks of a model-to-be, a lovely young lady with a sweet and caring disposition--that is why I like to call her "Missy". She is slow to complain and quick to laugh. Missy looks and acts like a typical preteen from a loving and supportive home. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Missy lives in a crack house.

Missy plays the games of a child, Missy shoulders the responsibility of a matriarch in a household overflowing with wasted lives. In spite of constant disruption and confusion, she is making good grades and trying to manage some sense of normalcy in her own life. There are people who notice Missy's quiet determination--there are people who care. They would like to see her removed from this situation which invites hopelessness at every turn. Missy cannot turn her back on her family. She stays where she is and we are trying to honor her choice.

Missy is not waiting for opportunity to knock. Missy is quietly creating her own opportunities out of nothing. She has put in her volunteer hours at Virtual Scavengers and now has a computer of her own. While her siblings make a habit of flunking, she is making good grades. Missy even gets involved in community activities. She is definitely not waiting for things to be handed to her. Missy is industriously creating her own opportunity as she goes. She has her sights set on modeling school as soon as she finishes high school.

"What is opportunity, and when does it knock? It never knocks. You can wait a whole lifetime, listening and hoping, and you will hear no knocking. None at all. You are opportunity, and you must knock on the door leading to your destiny. You prepare yourself to recognize opportunity, to pursue and seize opportunity as you develop the strength of your personality, and build a self-image with which you are able to live." --Maxwell Maltz
