Please don't try to change me

In my heart of hearts, I weep over my inadequacies and failures. I want to change. I want to be so much more than I feel I am. I seriously search for answers, for ways to change myself, for whatever it may take to turn me into the person I believe I should be. Sometimes I make progress, sometimes I regress, but the one thing that stops me cold and brings progress to a total halt is YOUR efforts to change me.

When I do become stressed enough to admit to you that I want to be a better person, I'm looking for an encouraging word not a list of my failures and what I should have done. Be assured, I will not return to you if I feel more diminished after speaking with you than I did when I approached you.

How many articles have been written about not getting married with intentions to change your spouse because you cannot change another; that the change comes from within the person. Why do we fail to recognize the advice holds true for friendships, for parent-child relations, in the workplace and in the church. The people in my life who have said, "Just do it" are still around long after those who told me how to do it have faded from my memory.

God gave me the right to make choices even though He is the only one capable of really helping me be all that I should be. So, remember next time I may happen to approach you: your advice is not wanted while your encouragement to surrender it all to The Heavenly Father is desperately craved--just allow me to do it believing it is my decision.

"It is not always easy to choose the Higher Will; often we have to give up that which the ego holds most dear. But as we release our attachments, we are reborn to a larger reality where true happiness and peace abound. That is why spiritual seekers have always affirmed: 'Not my will, but thine, be done.' State your willingness to let that Higher Power work through you for the highest good of yourself and others. Meditating on the following words will help you to attain this goal: 'The Lord makes known His will to me, and I joyfully obey. Spirit guides my every step and love reveals the way'." --Douglas Bloch
