Move Beyond the Threshold
If we ask to be saved and stop there, assuming all is accomplished, it is somewhat like opening the door of our home, sitting down in the first available chair and never moving again because we are confident we are "there". Don't we feel a need to find the kitchen and get food? Don't we feel a need to lie down on the bed and sleep?
What happens with the rest of our life if we never venture beyond the first chair inside the door? Do we starve to death? Do we pass away from lack of sleep? We cannot remain just inside the door any more than we can ask to be saved and remain a newborn babe in the arms of God. We must be nourished, we must grow, we must learn through His guidance and our mistakes, we must develop our understandings and pass them on to others who are our younger siblings in Christ.
"Every moment and every event of every man’s life on earth plants something in his soul. For just as the wind carries thousands of winged seeds, so each moment brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imperceptibly in the minds and wills of men. Most of these unnumbered seeds perish and are lost, because men are not prepared to receive them: for such seeds as these cannot spring up anywhere except in the good soil of freedom, spontaneity and love." --Thomas Merton
