    A Deep Inner Calm

Manipulation, lies, chaos swirl round about us and create in us a state of perpetual panic. As the windstorm of life frantically tosses us, we are occasionally aware of a calming quietness. We grasp for this calm, yet should we catch hold of it, we are discomforted by it and, all too frequently, we toss it away.

"The surface of the ocean changes constantly. Now it is smooth and quiet. Again it becomes violent and tempestuous. But in its depths, down under the storms that whip the surface into a fury, there is a zone of eternal calm which no storm ever reaches, no hurricane ever ruffles. The surface of life is also in a state of constant flux, with good days and bad, victory and defeat. To maintain, as the ocean does, a deep inner calm, while the storms of misfortune, reverses, fears and worries lash at the surface of life, is to discover the secret of serenity." --Wilferd A. Peterson

Yes, we long for this serenity, but the spirit of adventure within us is revolting against this inner calm. It sets us up for the next opportunity to get our way through using a small fib or a cute little maneuver which seem so innocent until we're back in the windstorm--the windstorm we have often created through our own actions.

There is a secret about serenity which often eludes us: within the depths of this inner calm is a new kind of adventure, an adventure which is both rewarding and fulfilling and can smooth the surface as well as the depths. It is an entirely new dimension to life which can only be discovered through conscious effort to avoid anything which sets up turmoil. Yet, it is within our line of vision all the time. It is Love.
