    Not Taking the Easy Way

I want you to know upfront that I am frustrated right now. I am working with a teenage father who is willing to accept the responsibilites of parenthood while his efforts are being blocked from every direction except one--easy drug money. He also has to deal with the knowledge that if he was not willing to accept the responsibility of parenthood, he could still be in high school enjoying everything his friends are experiencing.

He understands he has made a mistake and that others are permanently affected by his mistake. He wants to move forward in a positive direction so he has enrolled in GED training in order to be able to take the test as soon as he reaches the minimum age. In the meantime, he is trying to feed and clothe his family and get into a financial situation where he can go back to school for advanced training.

No matter how much I plead, he will not consider staying in school because of the financial needs. So this is where we stand today: No agency help unless he goes back to school and he is convinced they cannot survive without his working.

I'm one of those uninformed persons who thought there were always choices and there was no excuse for taking the easy way out, especially if it were illegal. I am learning life is far more complicated for many of our young people. It just really hurts to look at him while holding paper after paper offering him options for the future but none covering bread for today.

"When the hard times of life come, we know that no matter how tragic the circumstances seem, no matter how long the spiritual drought, no matter how long and dark the days, the sun is sure to break through; the dawn will come. The warmth of his assurance will hold us in an embrace once again, and we will know that our God has been there all along. We will hear him say, through it all, 'Hold on, my child, joy comes in the morning!'" --Gloria Gaither
