    Soul-wrenching Moments

Today was the day Jane, with her zero technical skills, marched off to build a computer for the children of The Living in Simple Faith House. Tina went with her to build a second computer. Tina was a bundle of nerves and had to muster all her strength to get herself into the car. Tina was absolutely certain she would fail and look like a fool. So, the two of us along with all our inadequacies headed out for the Virtual Scavengers Project's Saturday work session.

We were under the impression we would be working in the warehouse the first day doing the simple things like putting old hard drives in one box and old modems in another. We nearly panicked when we were escorted to a work bench and told to grab a computer from the stacks so we could learn to break it down. Before we had a chance to scurry to the nearest exit, two trained volunteer workers came alongside us to show us how to open and clean the computer. Very patiently, they led us through the steps of pulling out parts and checking them for usability. Tina was the first new person to have her workmanship pass inspection today. She could not conceal her delight.

We really had a good time in an atmosphere bordering on horseplay while serious work was always taking place. We learned many of the volunteers were going far beyond building a computer and were in training to become certified so they could move into a good paying job. Some of the people were homeless, some disabled, but all were intent upon becoming knowledgeable in a field which leads to a new career.

The mission of the Virtual Scavenger Project is truly an example of humankind giving one another a boost. I can hardly wait till Saturday comes again!
