Peace and Love Don't Require Understanding

Today has been a day of ups and downs which has me reflecting on the years when I was not in touch with God. The sorrows of a day like today would have crushed me back when I was existing alone. The elations of a day like today would not have occurred back when I was existing alone. This life in Christ is utterly impossible to explain--just as impossible as explaining the concept of love to someone who has lived an entire life in isolation, never experiencing kindness and caring from another.

I have been on this journey a very long time. I understand so much and yet I don't understand at all. It is a tremendous mystery and I accept it as such. As long as I continue to taste, smell and feel the supreme sweetness of this mystery I shall be content--for to have it all revealed might lessen the delicious impact upon my spirit. When a smile and a look of admiration imparted to another human being, can be reflected in a boost to their career, then this is the mysterious move of the unseen world which I can only experience through the receipt of a supremely sweet thank you.

This tremendous mystery of the spirit is the gift of a God of love and mercy who is always working with us through the moments of joy and of sorrow. When we can accept the bitter and the sweet as vital ingredients in the creation of a better us and preparation for our perfection, we become satisfied to let the mystery be and enjoy the taste, smell and feel of its sweetness.

"God of love and mercy, you call us to be your people, you gift us with your abundant grace. Make us a holy people, radiating the fullness of your love. Form us into a community, a people who care, expressing your compassion. Remind us day after day of our baptismal call to serve, with joy and courage, Teach us how to grow in wisdom and grace and joy in your presence. Through Jesus and in your Spirit, we make this prayer. Amen." --The Millennium Prayer
