Great Joy Springs from Tiny Instances

As I approached her classroom, the door opened and I was instantly drawn to the beautiful, dancing, dark eyes. She was happy today and she quickly related that the source of her excitement was a sudden responsiveness on the part of a withdrawn student. She told me teachers experience so much negativity that even the tiniest positive moments are cause for great joy to well up. She laughed about people in other professions thinking something was wrong with her if trivial instances were a major source of excitement.

The momentary communication breakthrough with a withdrawn child may seem insignificant to others, but a real teacher knows the potential difference those moments can make in a child's future--especially if they are compounded. There are many great people who can relate one moment with one good teacher being pivotal in their ability to rise out of difficulties which were sapping them.

In a day and age when teacher bashing is a national pastime, I am awed by the wonderful people who have the self-confidence and the personal fortitude to ignore everything and everyone else in order to simply concentrate on creating real lives for the real children who are struggling; who are not understanding the impact on their own future.

"If we choose to we can share joy that is more beautiful than all the flowers in spring. We can give love that is more wonderful than the sunniest summer’s day. We can live a life that is more glorious than an entire forest in autumn. We can bloom where we are planted every single day of our lives. We can produce good fruits even during the worst weather. And we can plant seeds of goodness and delight in our souls and in the souls of others that will produce a harvest that never ends." --Joseph J. Mazzella
