Awaken Your Senses
by Terri McPherson

I'm always looking for ways to add a dash of beauty, a slice of peace and serenity to my life. The older I get, the more I realize I'm surrounded by it. All I have to do is open my heart and see it. A shift in perception, looking at something from a different angle or a newly discovered place inside myself, alters the ordinary.

Doing laundry becomes a time of peaceful reflection, rather than a mundane chore, when I remember how the clothes got dirty instead of concentrating on the task of getting them clean. A big red stain on the front of a white shirt, size 6X, brings back the laughter and rosy-lipped smile of my granddaughter as she tackled a candy apple. Each scrub and soak, before the shirt is ready for the washer, offers another opportunity to revisit her delight.

As I fold my husband's work clothes, I picture his tired face at the end of a long day. He works hard to support his family and meet his obligations. I don't ever want to take that for granted. A rush of love and gratitude, as warm as the clothes I'm handling, fills me up as I fold each item.

Maybe I'm too easy to please, but seventy- cents bought me a great deal of pleasure the other day. I spotted a tub of colored rocks on the counter at the pharmacy. Each stone had a different word engraved into the top of it. I sorted through the tub and picked one bearing the word 'create'. I also chose a blue one that said, 'believe'. They were thirty-five cents apiece.

Like private little sentinels of support and encouragement, they now sit on my desk, on either side of my computer monitor.

Awaken your senses to beauty, peace and serenity. You walk past them, stand near them and sit next to them every day. Make up your mind to wake up your senses and see them.
